Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) affect approximately 1.2 million people in the United States, with more than 11,000 new injuries per year. Caused by damage to the spinal cord resulting from trauma or from disease or degeneration, SCI has been a major focus for CIRM for research and therapy development, awarding more than $55 million to this area of research.
