In the past, U.S. presidents have used their authority to direct federal funding toward, or away from, embryonic stem cell research. President George W. Bush signed an executive order in 2001 banning the use of federal funds for such research, which President Barack Obama reversed in 2009. While President Trump has not expressed an official position, VP Mike Pence, Speaker Paul Ryan, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price are vehement opponents of stem cell research, making a reinstatement of this ban very possible. This would threaten the progress we’ve made and endanger lives of thousands of patients across the nation.
