PALO ALTO, CA – California’s leading elected officials – from our governor and local mayors to our federal and state representatives – are united in support of Proposition 14. The Initiative will continue the state’s investment in advancing new stem cell research, treatments and cures for chronic diseases and conditions such as cancer, Diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, stroke and even COVID-19.  Proposition 14 will allow California to continue to lead the world in medical research, generate additional tax, create jobs and provide hope to the millions of California patients who need treatments now – and in the future.

California’s leading Federal, State and Local Elected Officialsoffer the following statements in support of Proposition 14:

“As a lifelong supporter of stem cell research, I’m proud that the State of California has chosen to stand on the cutting edge of medical miracles and scientific breakthroughs,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.  “I’m voting for Proposition 14 because now is not the time to slow down in the race toward life-saving cures and treatments.  Investing in medical research elevates our state’s renowned universities and institutions, provides employment and education opportunities, fuels our economy, and most importantly, provides hope to California families and patients.”

“I’m proud to have stood with a majority of Californians in 2004 to support Proposition 71 that helped create the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and launched our state to be the stem cell capitol of the world,” said U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein. “Proposition 14 will be an extension to the work done by our world-renowned researchers, scientists and institutions in the state in finding treatments, cures and therapies to some of our most fatal diseases and conditions. Let’s grab the opportunity to support a life-saving measure and vote YES on Proposition 14.”

“California is the global leader for stem cell research and medical discovery. Proposition 14 will allow our world-renowned research universities and physicians to advance lifesaving treatments for millions of individuals and families in California facing life-threatening or chronic diseases and conditions, now and in the future,” said Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.  “Federal funding for stem cell research is limited, unreliable, and at-risk from Trump Administration and Republican attacks. Proposition 14, which will continue what was started in 2004, is the most promising pathway to new treatments and cures – providing an economic stimulus at a time when Californians need it the most. I am proud to support Proposition 14!”

“In 2004, Californians made an initial investment in stem cell research that has since resulted in treatments and cures that have saved and improved the lives of so many of our friends, families, and loved ones,” said California Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins (D-San Diego). “By supporting Proposition 14, we once again have an opportunity to invest in this critical research, which would advance much-needed treatments, cures, and therapies for chronic diseases and conditions. With so many lives on the line, there is too much at stake not to vote Yes on Proposition 14.”

“The research funding that Proposition 14 protects has advanced groundbreaking treatments and cures and has helped L.A. become one of the world’s preeminent medical research hubs,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti, City of Los Angeles. “Proposition 14 creates jobs and will save lives. Join me and vote yes on Proposition 14.”

“Many [clinical] trials are on track to result in additional FDA-approved treatments over the next few years, and CIRM’s nearly 3,000 published medical discoveries have created the basis for more to come”, said Mayor Libby Schaaf, City of Oakland. “But, if California voters do not pass Proposition 14, many treatments and cures may end here — and we will miss an opportunity to gain early intervention therapies and stimulate our state’s struggling economy.”

“Proposition 14 will not only advance the discovery of treatments and cures for chronic disease and conditions but will also continue on critical research and clinical trials currently underway focused on combatting COVID-19 – a disease that has impacted the lives of every Californian, along with every individual in the world,” said Mayor London Breed, City of San Francisco. “Critical funding for these efforts will soon end if Californians do not choose to support and pass Proposition 14. We cannot lose this momentum and risk delaying or halting progress towards a cure for COVID-19 and other chronic diseases and illnesses.”

“When Californians passed Proposition 71 in 2004, we launched our state to the global forefront of stem cell research and catalyzed a new field that is poised to benefit generations of California patients and their families – we simply can’t stop now,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg, City of Sacramento. “Proposition 14 will continue the groundbreaking work we started nearly two decades ago, advancing the treatments and cures right at our fingertips – I encourage all Californians to join me in voting YES on Proposition 14.”

These elected leaders join a growing coalition of more than 100 patient advocate organizations, hundreds of the world’s renowned scientists and physicians, dozens of the state’s elected officials, leading business organizations, the California Democratic Party and the University of California in supporting Proposition 14.
